Final Mission of SSGT Samuel L. Modesitt
SSGT Samuel L. Modesitt was a cannon crewmember of Alpha Battery, 6/27th Artillery at Firebase Quan Loi. On June 16, 1967, he was killed while on a fire mission when hit by fragments from a premature muzzle blast. However, his former battery commander reported his death was caused when enemy sappers threw a satchel charge down the muzzle tube of the eight-inch gun that SSGT Modesitt was operating while on an H&I (Harassment & Interdiction) fire mission. (Narrative by CAPT Erv Kamm, Mil. Ret.) [Taken from quanloi.org and coffeltdatabase.org]
