Ground Casualty

SP4 Peter R. Miller was a Unit Supply Specialist serving with the 573rd Supply & Service Company, 45th General Support Group, Army Support Command Qui Nhon, 1st Logistical Command, U.S. Army Republic of Vietnam. As a Supply Specialist, Miller was responsible for keeping Command personnel provided with supplies and equipment; however, working in a rear echelon capacity in the war zone did not preclude the handling of weapons as part of their daily routine, and many clerks, cooks, and others with administrative and supply duties were required to participate in providing security on the perimeters of the bases where they were assigned. Accordingly, on May 1, 1972, Miller was on guard duty at Camp Holloway, located two kilometers (1.2 miles) southeast of Pleiku in Pleiku Province, RVN. At approximately 9:30 PM, he was fatally injured after being shot by another individual. The Army’s Criminal Investigation Division opened an investigation; however, it is unclear what outcome it produced as the Army generally provided very little details regarding such incidents.
