Ground Casualty
HM3 Carl J. Miller was a U.S. Navy corpsman attached to Combined Action Company 2-5 (CACO 2-5), 2nd Combined Action Group (2nd CAG), III Marine Amphibious Force (III MAF). The Combined Action Program’s mission was to reinforce and train local village militia soldiers and was characterized by the placement of a thirteen-member Marine rifle squad, augmented by a U.S. Navy corpsman. HM3 Miller’s role as the medical specialist provided immediate life-saving care for both the Marines and Popular Forces soldiers he served with in CACO. He also instructed in disease prevention and supplied care in case of illness. On December 8, 1968, HM3 Miller reportedly died as the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. An autopsy was performed at U.S. Naval Support Activity Station Hospital in Da Nang, RVN, on December 10, 1968. An investigation of the incident was conducted by U.S. Marine Corps officials.
