Dennis Deal: Fellow track team athlete at The Citadel, fellow officer on LZ X-Ray
Tom was a Senior on The Citadel Track team. I was a J.V. Freshman on the Team. At the SC State Championships, Tom and I were the only members of The Citadel Track Team to win Gold Medals in our events or, for that matter, any Medals. 4 years later we happened to be reunited 4 weeks prior to landing on LZ-Xray. It was so good to see and work with him again. Then suddenly, it all changed. Tom ended up sacrificing himself so that another more seriously injured Officer could be medically evacuated. I've often remembered Tom Metsker and our carefree times in Sports, the Training Table, and the Joy of Competing in a kinder gentler world. Then the Horrors of War caught up to both of us. I survived, Tom didn't. He was a highly trained, highly qualified Officer who certainly had a significantly accomplished career in his future which, sadly, was a future denied him as well untold Soldiers who would have benefitted significantly by serving with him. I'll never forget you. Yours always has been the first grave I visit when I'm at Arlington. I look forward to our reunion on Fiddlers' Green. GARRY OWEN, Sir!! Dennis Deal

Thank You
Dear Captain Thomas Metsker, Thank you for your service as an Infantry Unit Commander with the 1st Cavalry. I read about the Ia Drang, so sad. Saying thank you isn't enough, but it is from the heart. It is another autumn. Time passes quickly. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage and faithfulness, especially now. Rest in peace with the angels.
