Never Knew Him But I Know He Was a Great Guy
My dad didn't know Bobby personally but he met him once at a diner. He was friends with my dad's girlfriend at the time. Bobby was about to go to Vietnam and the next time my dad head about him he had been killed in action.
My father was drafted but due to his bad ankle (and the fact that he had purposely banged up his knees with a 2x4 the night before) he did not go to Vietnam.
I don't know why but whenever I go on this site I always find Bobby and look at his pictures. I've read about him and the posthumous awards he's received, he was a very brave young man.
Ken, I am so sorry for your loss and I wish I had more information about your brother. He made a lasting impression on my dad even though they only met once, and after all these years his name is still remembered.

Prince Matchabelli
Robert, when he was in High School, was voted "Prince Matchabelli" in a contest for a men's perfume ad. Robert was handsome and Robert was kind. We were friends. I remember the last time I saw him. We went to see a movie in New York City--"Bonnie and Clyde". We spoke about how violent the movie was, and how tired we were from all the shooting.
We had made plans to see each other again, but he never came home.

Remembering An American Hero
Dear SGT Robert Irwin Meeker, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir
Curt Carter
