honoring you....

Thank you for your service to our country so long ago sir. You died at 18 years of age. I am 74 and have lived a long and fulfilling life. It is tragic you never had that same opportunity. May you rest in eternal peace.

I remember Orlando

Orlando was one of two Marines killed on December 27, 1968 by a booby-trapped 105mm artillery round. Five other Marines were wounded by that same booby-trap. The event occurred in an area known as Tu Cao which is just south of Da Nang and and west of China Beach. I bandaged the one individual who later died in the hospital. Orlando was killed outright.

Final Mission of PFC Orlando Medina

On December 27, 1968, elements of C Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division were conducting a patrol three miles north of Dien Ban in Quang Nam Province, RVN. At approximately 10:00 AM, a 105mm artillery shell rigged as a booby-trap was tripped by one of the Marines. The blast killed one, PFC Orlando Medina, and wounded seven others. Two Navy personnel accompanying the Marines were also wounded. A total of ten persons were evacuated. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org and Command Chronology, 1st Marines, December 1968]
