JOSEPH, MY BROTHER

DEAR JOSEPH,

I REMEMBER THE DAY MOM PICKED YOU UP FROM ST M,ARY'S ORPHANAGE. I WAS IN THE CAR WITH HER, AND WAS SO EXCITED!!! I WAS VERY YOUNG AND YOU WERE 7 YEARS OLDER THAN ME. YOU HAD A LARGE SUITCASE WITH YOU AND I HEARD SCRATCHES FROM INSIDE THE SUITCASE. .YOU PUT YOUR FINGER TO YOUR LIPS AND SAID "SHHHH" AND INSIDE YOUR SUITCASE, YOU HAD A TINY LITTLE BLACK AND WHITE PUPPY NAMED "JINGLES", WHICH YOU BROUGHT HOME TO BE WITH YOUR NEW FAMILY. ALTHOUGH YOU SPENT EVERY HOLIDAY AND SOME WEEK ENDS BEFORE BEING HOME TO YOUR NEW FAMILY, YOU WERE SO SHY AND NERVOUS . MOM WAS YOUR SAVIOUR AND YOU FOLLOWED HER AROUND LIKE A LITTLE DUCKLING EVEN THOUGH YOU WERE AROUND 14 YEARS OLD. LIFE AT OUR HOUSE WAS SO HARD FOR YOU WHEN YOU HAD TO CONTEND WITH 3 OLDER CRAZY BROTHERS AND ANOTHER BROTHER BILL WHO WAS ONLY 4 MONTHS YOUNGER THAN YOU . YOU HAD NO CONTACT WITH YOUR BIRTH MOTHER AND YOUR BIRTH SISTERS FOR YEARS, BUT WHEN YOU RESUMED CONTACT WITH THEM WHEN THEY FOUND OUT YOU HAD A GOOD PAYING JOB AND THAT YOU WERE CURIOUS AS ANY TEENAGER WOULD BE, TO MEET THEM AGAIN, WE LOST YOU FOR A FEW WEEKS. WHEN YOU CAME HOME I FELT THAT YO WERE HOME TO STAY, AND YOU WERE. YO UWENT TO MACHINIST'S SCHOOL AND YOU WERE PROUD TO BE WORKING A GOOD JOB WITH A VERY GOOD SALARY. THEN THE ARMY BECKONED, OK..DRAFTED, ..YOU TO JOIN THEM . YOU NEVER COMPLAINED AND WENT TO BASIC TRAINING AND WROTE SUCH OPTIMISTIC AND HAPPY LETTERS ABOUT FINDING GREAT FRIENDS FROM ALL LOVER THE COUNTRY AND THAT YOU LOVED LEARNING NEW SKILLS. POOR JOSEPH, YOU NEVER HAD A CHANCE. WHEN YOU WROTE HOME TO SAY THAT YOU GOING TO BE IN THE SCOUT DOG PLATOON, WE LAUGHED AND KNEW THAT YOU WERE I YOUR PROPER NICHE. WHEN YOU RECEIVED THE BRONZE STAR FOR YOU AND YOUR BOMB SNIFFING DOG ARRAS, FOR UNCOVERING MAJOR BOMBS THAT WOULD HAVE KILLED HUNDREDS OF YOUR PLATOON, WE KNNEW WHAT YOU WERE BORN FOR. BUT WHEN THE SGT.CAME TO OUR DOOR AND TOLD US THE NEWS THAT YOU WERE SHOT AND KILLED ON SEPTEMBER 22, 1968, WE WERE BROKEN HEARTED, THE LAST LETTER THAT YOU WROTE TO US CAME POSTHUMOUSLY AROUND LATE OCTOBER SAYING THAT YOU'D BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS. MANY YEARS LATER, I READ THAT YOUR DOG WAS KILLED, EVEN THOUGH YOU SAVED THE DOG'S LIFE DIN EXCHANGE OF YOUR OWN BY GOING OUT TO RESCUE HIM. ARRAS DIED FROM 'FRIENDLY ENEMY FIRE' BECAUSE, AS WITH ALL OF THE SOLDIERS WITH SCOUT DOGS , THE U.S. ARMY WOULD NOT BRING HOME THE BEAUTIFUL GERMAN SHEPHERDS THAT STAYED BY THESE SOLDIERS SIDE THROUGH EVERY BATTLE THAT THEY WERE BROUGHT INTO, ONLY TO DIE BY THE SAME AMERICAN ARMY THAT BROUGHT THESE FAITHFUL DOGS INTO THAT WAR. I HOPE YOU ARE WITH ARRAS, AND THAT YOUR LIFE ON EARTH AND DEATH BY THE HAND OF A SOUTH VIETNAMESE KID HAS BROUGHT YOU STRAIGHT TO HEAVEN, LOVE AND HAPPINESS FOREVER.

LOVE, YOUR 'LITTLE' SISTER DEBBIE.

Remembering An American Hero

Dear SP4 Joseph Mark Mazzone, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter
