My Cousin Kalani Maunakea

Rodney, known to us as "Kalani." He was a humble man that loved his family and treated us cousins with kindness. The last day of his R&R, he took all the little cousins, including myself, 6 years old to Waimanalo beach. I may have been a pest, but knowing he was going back to war in Vietnam, I followed him wherever he went that day, but he didn't mind. Less than a week later, while eating breakfast, the phone rang and we found out he had died in Vietnam. I still think of him from time to time. Never forget!

Remembering An American Hero

Dear SP4 Rodney H Maunakea, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter
