Lucky to have had such a Friend

How does one begin to put into words the thoughts and feelings about someone who became one of your best friends. Now days I can't even remember how I came to meet Joe. I do know Joe was the kind of person who got along with everyone he met. He was the kind of person who had a heart of gold just to put a figure of speech on it. I remember when I first met Joe he had a dog (Queenie) that he took care of over there, he took that dog with him everywhere that he could. They were kind of inseparable. Joe was a card player and was very good at it. But most of all I remember the times when we were just sitting and talking about everything and nothing in particular. I can't recall the exact things he use to say about his home, but I can recall the way he spoke of it with such admiration and feeling that you could almost see what he was talking about. I had rotated back to the States in July 70 and when I left Joe made me promise to call him on Thanksgiving as he would be home by then. Around Thanksgiving I called to his home in N.Y. His mother answered (I did not say who I was) and when I asked for little Joe, she started crying, and said he's in Heaven. I thought she may be talking about Joe's father. I said no I mean little Joe he should be home from Vietnam by now. I could tell she was real hurt and crying even harder, then she said, I told you he was in Heaven, she then told me that he had lost his life in Aug., only a few days after I had left in July. The loss of such a good friend hangs heavy on my heart, but even worse is to recall his mother's heavy burden of sorrow and grief. I pray that he is resting in peace, and although I know that the pain will never completely go away I do hope that time has eased some of his families pain. I remember you often Little Joe.BRBRGRADY N.C. Hassell,BRBR

13th Street Friend Remembers Joey

I first met Joey around the summer of 1961 when I was almost 10 years old. He was visiting his aunt & uncle on 13th Street in West Greenwich Village, NY...the block I grew up on. 13th Street was what was called a "kid block" back then. When a bunch of us kids on the block first saw Joey he was calling up to the window to his Aunt Lea and with us being wise city kids we were mimicking him…we thought we were being funny, but we weren't laughing for long...Joey got pretty steamed and was ready to take us all on. We wound up right then and there loving the guy - and we all became very good friends from that day on. He was one of the nicest kids we ever knew. My family of seven had an especially deep affection for Joey; he often went places with us in our family station wagon. Over the next 7- 8 years Joey became an integral part of our crowd on 13th street...it was always the best of times when Joey was visiting our block. I hope he knew how special he was to us and how much he was loved. The last time I seen Joey was the summer of 1968, my family moved to Florida that fall. We moved back to NY in the late fall of 1970 when we learned of the sad news...that Joey had died in Vietnam just a few months earlier. We did not want to believe it...we were heartbroken. Joey made a huge impact on the lives of so many during his short stay here on earth...he touched many hearts and will never be forgotten.

Remembering My Sweet Cousin

Joey was my cousin. He was a wonderful young man. We were the same age and would hang around with our other cousins. I remember when Joey said he was joining the Army. We were all shocked. We were so young. Why did he want to go? He wanted to help his country. The night we said good-bye was very difficult. He wrote to me while in Viet Nam. I loved his letters. I am still saddened about his death. I still think of him. I live in Arizona and for many years I've wanted to get to Washington D.C. and see his name on The Wall. Tomorrow, I will get to see his name on the traveling Wall, coming to my small town in Arizona. Unexpectedly, another cousin, also a Viet Nam veteran, is in the state and will come here tomorrow. We will go to The Wall together and remember Joey. Joey is a part of my heart forever. Vivian Mattaliano
