BCT Ft. Leonard Wood

I just recently found out about Bernie's death in RVN from Mike McGuire who was a squad mate of Bernie and mine in Basic Training at Ft. "Lost in the Woods" in 1968. He was killed shortly after I DEROS'ed from RVN. Bernie, Mike, John Mameli and I cleaned many a latrine and waxed many squad bay floors together. Bernie was a team player and a great guy.

Basic Training

Bernie: In the same dorm room/platoon at Leonard Wood with Jack Markham and John Mameli, we, as out-of-shape teachers, somehow made it through. OCS for you and Nam for me. Returning thru Ft. Lewis you were there to meet me off the freedom bird. Then you began your tour. Some months later the phone rang . . . a flag-draped casket on a gray November day. Your parents have joined you now in Heaven. God Bless.

Your sacrifice

Bernie, Thank you for your friendship and sense of humor. We were so innocent in college, who could have ever guessed what plans destiny had for us? You will always be missed.
