Attack on Quang Tri Air Field - January 27, 1968

Quang Tri Air Field was located one kilometer (.6 miles) southwest of Quang Tri city in Quang Tri Province, RVN. On the early morning of January 27, 1968, the airfield was hit with sixty rounds of 122mm enemy rocket fire. Three Americans were killed including the commander of 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry, COL Herlihy T. Long. Also lost were SGT Joseph L. Begotka and PFC James D. Youngham (posthumously promoted to Corporal). Another twelve were wounded. Material losses included damage to the 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry communication jeep which had its tires blown out, windshield and lights shattered, and unknown damage to its radios. I was on the road in a fox hole when the mortor round hit. I was in C 5/7.

Col. Long was a great man. He walked the whole line of fox holes the day before the motor round hit. Rest in peace sir.

Jack Long

He served with my father in WWII, 8th Infantry Division, 13th Regiment. He was my father’s best friend. I remember going with my family to Alabama where the Long family lived to visit before he was sent on his last tour of duty. What a terrific man.
