Thank You
Dear Major Harold Lonergan, Thank you for your service as an Infantry Officer. Saying thank you isn't enough, but it is from the heart. It is another spring, but like none other. Time passes quickly. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage, guidance and faithfulness. Rest in peace with the angels.

Ground Casualty
MAJ Harold S. Lonergan was the Executive Officer of 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. At 9:30 AM on February 23, 1969, MAJ Lonergan was found lying face down next to his bunk in the hut he shared with another Marine officer. A corpsman was called who examined Lonergan and pronounced him dead. Lonergan was wearing an empty holster and his loaded .45 caliber pistol was under his body. An empty cartridge and spent bullet were found nearby. A CID investigation revealed that Lonergan had been relieved as acting Commanding Officer the day before his death. Furthermore, it was reported that he had been working extremely long hours and noticeably showed signs of strain and also signs of disappointment in being relieved. These findings led CID investigators to believe Lonergan took his own life on the morning of February 23, 1969. He was 40 years-old. [Taken from USMC investigation documents]

Major Lonergan
I had the honor of serving with Maj. Lonergan at Camp Matthews, CA, in 1962 - 64. He was a gentleman and always dropped by the armory to talk to us and just visit. He was the best Marine officer I ever had the honor and pleasure of serving with, even when I passed him and the Sgt Maj at the PX and forgot to take my pipe out of my mouth when I saluted. LOL I would have followed him anywhere.
