Remembering An American Hero
Dear SGT Edward Leon Wilmers, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, Sir
Curt Carter

VVA Chapter 211 Visits Ed Wilmers
An Excerpt from 211 News article "Involvement: Who benefits the most?" (October 1987)
"After arriving at the house, all 25 of us were ushered in by Judy. After entering this very small bedroom we were all introduced to SGT Ed Wilmers...
Ed can not speak because of surgical complications, but his eyes told their own story...Ed's mother told us that he had had big expectations about 'gettin the gooks', but that they had gotten Ed first. At that point I told her that I'd bet Ed got his share of them first. Ed's eyes lit up like candles and his smile gave us all a feeling of warmth and strong fellowship. Russ let Ed's mom know that we all understood how the volunteer system worked in 'Nam. 'You, you and you have volunteered'. Ed again lit up and again we all felt like we were six inches taller...
Let me tell you, friends, SGT Ed Wilmers lying in front of us, paralyzed, unable to speak, ashen grey in color, and cold to the touch, radiated more warmth and strength of cause than I will ever be able to give..."
