honoring you...

Thank you for your service to our country so long ago sir. You died at 18 years of age, two days before your 19th birthday. I am 74 and have lived a long and fulfilling life. It is tragic you never had that same opportunity. May you rest in eternal peace.

Final Mission of PFC Marvin E. Lively

PFC Marvin E. Lively was a trained Light Vehicle Driver serving with the 134th Quartermaster Company, attached to the 240th Quartermaster Battalion located at Phu Tai in Binh Dinh Province, RVN. Early in November 1968, and less than two months after arriving in Vietnam, Lively was assigned to fill a heavy vehicle driving position in the company's line haul platoon transporting petroleum. In this new role, he was required to quickly learn to operate the M52 five-ton tractor, a significant leap from the quarter- and three-quarter ton light vehicles he was familiar with. Furthermore, he would be pulling a M131 tanker trailer loaded with 5000 gallons of fuel. His first run was on November 7th, when Lively was part of a convoy providing supplies to U.S. Army bases at Pleiku, RVN. Traveling east on the first half of the 200-mile haul on National Highway QL-19, he successfully traversed both the An Khe and Mang Yang passes, two extremely treacherous sections of roadway. However, at Pleiku, he was unable to offload his entire fuel load, and was forced to return with fuel dangerously sloshing around in the trailer. Nevertheless, by late afternoon he made it safely back down the passes to the coastal plains. While running southeast on a road towards Qui Nhon, he became separated from the other two rigs leading the way. It was speculated that Lively was fearful he might get lost on his first visit to the Qui Nhon tank farm and was trying to catch up. A combined lack of experience and excessive speed resulted in a crash when he entered a long bend in the road along the river. The fuel load shifted, causing the trailer to roll and leave the pavement, pulling the tractor with it. It landed overturned after dropping approximately twelve feet into the dry riverbed. Lively was critically injured; he was admitted to the 67th Evacuation Hospital in Qui Nhon where he expired the following day. Lively was just two days from his 19th birthday.
