The News From Hilo/Currahee

From everything I have been able to learn, this man was loved by everyone who served with him.

He was Larry Gene Leopoldino, born April 18, 1947. His home of record was Hilo, Hawaii.

There was so little said about him in the newspaper. So few details of his life. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Leopoldino and was also survived by a brother, Wayne and a sister Hazel. He had worked at Newton's Service Station in Hilo.

Larry served with the 506th Infantry of the 101st Airborne. He was a Currahee.

He was killed April 25,1969, a week after his 22nd birthday.
Larry was the 189th Island serviceman to die in Viet Nam, the 27th from the Big Island.

His funeral was held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hilo and he was buried in the Hawaii Veterans Cemetery.

I think that does not tell his story.

God rest your soul Currahee.
There are many who still miss you.

A Little boy Remembers....

Larry i still remember you,i lived across the street from you in our hometown of Hilo.you were such a happy go lucky guy.always with a smile on youre face.always good to us kids in the area. i remember how you would whistle those songs so bueatifully. i remember the time you drove up to the mountain and brought us kids a load of snow just to play in it. that was the first time i ever touched snow.i remember your car; a brand new 1967 camarro, you had it all tricked out.loved that jade green color.it was fast as all get out.I remember that crazy little yellow go-kart that you built, and how you took me on rides running all over the place.I remember when you left for Vietnam .
I also remember watching the daily casualty reports on T.V. and my grandmother praying for you as we saw the totals.Burned in my mind is the day they came and told your parents that you had been killed.I could hear your mom crying from across the street.how we cried, all of us together.your family was never the same.they all seemed so distant from each other.I guess they could not accept the fact that their youngest son was gone forever.killed in a land far away from your home. in a war that they could not understand. they knew you did what was asked of you. you answered the call of your country ,when so many others ran away and hid.they kept your grave covered with flowers, from head to toe for many, many years.their house and yard became a flower factory. they spent their day working on the growing of all sorts beautiful floral arrangements, and the evening crying beside your grave.your camarro they could never bring themselves to sell it. your dad took such good care of it.never drove it just would start it up pull it out of the garage wash it,wax it and pull her back in.never seeing the road since you put it in the garage. and so it was like this each and every day for all those years until i myself left Hilo and joined the Army.some time during my hitch your mother passed on.i pray that she is with you and has found the peace she so deserved. I dont get back to hawaii much these days, work and just my life has taken me away from our island home but the last time i was there i took my son to the veterans cemetary in Hilo to pay my respects to many of my family that he never met. There you were. I told my son all i could about you, and your sacrifice so long ago.I told him about the life you never got to live, and how lucky i was to live mine.how fortunate i was to know you. All these things from so long ago i keep with me, and Larry
that little boy from across the street will always remember you... i wish you peace.
