A great friend

I was Michael's roommate in 1971 for about 3-4 months before he was killed in 1971. Like Michael, I was a Chinook crewmember and we often flew together. We hit it off as friends right away and I think one reason was because neither Michael nor I drank or took drugs. I learned a lot about being a crewchief and flight engineer from Michael. I bragged about Alabama football and he bragged about Indiana basketball. I named one of my sons after Michael.

Thank You and God Bless

Michael,
I have never met you, but we share the same last name. I am quite confident that our families are not related, or at least not close enough that we would have had the chance to know one another. I teach 8th grade American history at Crestview Middle School in Convoy, Ohio (Van Wert County.) Each year, I challenge my students to find a relative or someone with a similar name on the wall so that they may do a rubbing and feel a connection. Each year, I visit the wall and find your name. I know where your panel and name lie on the wall, but I make myself look you up in the directory as part of a ritual of thanks for your service to our country. I keep those rubbings in my classroom and mention you to my students before we leave for our annual trip. I'll see you again in May 2015. We'll be thinking of you here in Convoy. Rest in peace, soldier.
