A True Hero! He was told to stay with the boat, but he decided to save his buddies instead.
Rich was on his 2nd tour of duty in Nam, and only 2 weeks from coming home. He had been slightly wounded the first tour.
Rich was home December, 1968 till after New Years 1969. He volunteered to go over this 2nd time, because they needed interpreters to train the S.Vietnamese to operate the swiftboats on the rivers.
The Chaplain sent a lovely letter to Rich's parents, not only to express their sorrow but to tell us the story of how great a hero he really was in saving the lives of his friends.
They were on patrol when they were ambushed. They had to beach the boat and Rich was ordered to stay on the boat and not get off. All the other men grabbed their rifles and got off the boat to fight.
The men became pinned down and could not get back to the boat. Rich made a decision, he grabbed his rifle and instead of staying on the boat & firing he jumped off and started shooting to draw fire away from the other men. All of his buddies started running back, but as Rich was returning he was shot in the back of the head. The only one lost that day was Rich. The Chaplain said he was A True Hero. He gave his life to save his fellowmen.
Rich came home 7 days after May 5, 1969. We buried him on his 22nd birthday May 14, 1969.
Thank you Terry Boone, who ever you are, for posting Rich's picture. Mine were lost in a storage fire (years ago) when stored during a move. It is great to see his smiling face again and not just try to remember what a handsome man he was in my mind.
I am forever grateful and thank all of you who gave your lives and those who came home from every war the US has fought. Without your sacrifice we would not be enjoying the freedom we have in the United States of America today. YOU ARE ALL A TRUE HERO TO ME!!!
May God Bless you for all you have given.

Thank You Boats
As a fellow Buckeye, I say "THANK YOU"
As a Veteran, I say "JOB WELL DONE, BOATS"
As an American, "YOUR DEATH WAS NOT IN VAIN"
And as a Believer, "YOUR SPIRIT IS ALIVE--AND STRONG"
Although we never met personally, I want to thank you Richard L. Baumberger, Jr., for your courageous and valiant service, faithful contribution, and most holy sacrifice, given to this great nation of ours!
Again, thank you Sailor, for a job well done!
FAIR WINDS, AND ETERNAL PEACE MY FRIEND
