Casualty at Sea
In late 1965, the supercarrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) was participating in combat operations off the coast of Vietnam when on December 6th a flash fire occurred in the carrier’s No. 3 machinery room. To avoid an explosion, an ammunition magazine was flooded. The blaze caused heavy damage aboard the ship, and two sailors, FA Charles A. Philhower and FN Billy D. Hooper, died as a result of smoke inhalation while fighting the fire. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org and navysite.de]
