thanks for keeping a second grader smiling

although we never met, we were pen pals across the continents. john as he signed his letters, always returned the letters i sent him. he made me feel so proud, i had a marine as a pen pal. he was defending our country, and still had the time to write this second grader. long after the letters had been lost, his memory had not. never hearing from him again i assumed he returned to the states safely. after years of thinking this thought, i as a teacher had the opportunity to view the wall on a class trip. browsing through the directory my eyes could not believe what they saw. i stood frozen in my steps and cried for close to an hour.
i wanted to thank john, his family, and friends for allowing him to enter my life. although it was short, it is a lifetime of memories.

you made a young child smile

Curtis John Krauhs, thank you for remembering me while you were serving your country proudly. I was a second grader, with a pen pal so far away. Every time I wrote you, you returned my letter. I grew up remembering your words, and keeping your letters. The letters have long been lost, but your memory is not. I grew up and never knew what happened to you, till I as a teacher took my class on a trip to Washington DC. There out of a curious nature I looked your name up in the book, there it was. I stood and cried for close to an hour, never knowing that my pen pal had given his life.
Now when I return every year I take my students to your name, and show them that this young man befriended a second grader for life. My own children also visit with me, to express our thanks John.
To your family, thank you for giving a young boy so long ago a wonderful and fantastic young man I called friend
