An account of that morning 16 April 1966
The account is too large for the limit of 512 characters. My email for anyone interested: [email protected]. I had 3d platoon, Tony had 1st Platoon.
LEST WE FORGET
Gentlemen - As we work to ensure the success of our TBS Class 1-66 Golden Anniversary Reunion, memories are flooding back to many of us. Foremost in my mind today is the 50th anniversary of the death of 2ndLt Anthony (Tony) J. Battista, a member of 1st Platoon, B Company, who was the first member of our TBS Class 1-66 to die in Vietnam. As I was thinking of Tony this very day, I received an unexpected email from Samuel (Sam) W. Smith, Jr. (B-4) honoring our fallen brother, which is my privilege to share with you. Tony Battista lived but a few rooms from me in O'Bannon Hall and we frequently talked late into the night. When I moved to Louisville, Kentucky in 1969, I became aware of the fact that Tony was a graduate of the University of Louisville, through which he was commissioned in 1965. Please take a moment today to remember Tony and the other 19 members of our TBS Class 1-66, who gave their lives for our nation during the Vietnam War. Rest assured that although they will not be able to join us for our Golden Anniversary Reunion this coming October 2-5, 2016, their spirit will permeate all that we do, as we remember their sacrifice. I sincerely thank Sam Smith for helping us to honor Tony in such a personal and meaningful manner.

April 16, 1966 - In Memoriam
Fifty years ago today, Tony Battista was the first we lost of our TBS 1-66 class. We were together that early morning. Tony and I were platoon commanders with H Co. 2/9. He had 1st Platoon, and I the 3rd. Fresh from Basic School, we took over our respective platoons in Feb. 1966.
At that time our Battalion TAOR was along Route 1, south of Danang, with 1/9 to our west at Hill 55, and 3/9 to our east (ran into Charlie Tutt, M Co. 3/9 when our units were operating along the TAOR boundary). We were basically conducting platoon and company sized operations. In April, as I recall, there had been some political and power conflict within Provincial and ARVN command which resulted in the ARVN units to our south abandoning their forward bases in order to support their respective leaders in Danang - leaving behind their positions, ammo and other supplies. The VC were reportedly taking advantage of the situation, and on short notice we were sent to discourage that and make a show of force..

Family memories
Sitting in my grandparents garage sharing Milkbones with cousin Tony and my aunt's dalmation Gypsy. Yes, all 3 of us ate them!! I was in college when we received the horrible news, and then wasn't able to attend the funeral with my mother and aunt. I thank all of you who remembered Tony here, and especially those who shared he last day with him. I admire him even more now that I know the history.
