Remembered

DEAR SERGEANT BATTERTON.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE AS A GRUNT. ADVENT IS HERE, AND CHRISTMAS IS APPROACHING. WE ARE THANKFUL FOR YOU. THE NLEW YEAR IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER, WHICH MAKES IT FAR TOO LONG FOR YOU TO HAVE BEEN GONE. WATCH OVER THE U.S.A., IT STILL NEEDS YOUR COURAGE.. GOD BLESS YOU. MAY THE SAINTS AND ANGELS BE AT YOUR SIDE. REST IN PEACE.

I remember you.

Although I was several years younger, I remember Troy. My mother worked at the high school, so I knew a lot of the "older kids" through her.

One day I was visiting a friend's home in New Castle when Troy drove by. My friend, who was Troy's age, yelled at Troy's car as it went by. Troy turned around and came back to chat for a few minutes while us boys stood around listening to him talk about leaving for Vietnam in a few days.

Just before Troy got into his car to drive off my friend shook Tory's hand and told him, "Be safe over there." Troy replied, "Don't worry about me. I'll be okay."

I offer thanks and gratitude for his service and his sacrifice for our country. He might not have known who I was, but I'll never forget him nor that day.

Very Respectfully

Remembering An American Hero

Dear SGT Troy Hillis Batterton, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter
