We Will Remember

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

An Hoa Combat Base – March 19, 1969

LCPL Barry L. Kopp was a communications wireman serving with K Battery, 4th Battalion, 13th Marines, 1st Marine Division, Third Marine Amphibious Force. In March 1969, K Battery, was located at An Hoa Combat Base, a U.S. Marine Corps and Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) base west of Hoi An in Quang Nam Province, RVN. The mission of K Battery was the general support of the 5th Marines and 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines, and direct support of reconnaissance teams inserted throughout the An Hoa area. The battery also conducted numerous counter-rocket and mortar missions, many of which were performed during periods of incoming fire. Other missions included harassment and interdiction fire, rocket suppression missions, and fire on intelligence targets. Kopp did a variety of tasks to maintain the communications network for the battery. These included laying wire, locating system faults, and adjusting equipment for proper operation. At about 2:30 PM on March 19th, Kopp was in the battery supply tent when it received a direct hit by an 122mm rocket. He sustained fatal fragmentation wounds to the head; another man was seriously wounded and medivacked to Da Nang. The supply tent was destroyed with the Communications and Ordnance unit suffering damages to equipment. The battery returned counter-rocket/mortar fire on the suspected enemy firing site with unobserved results. Remembering An American Hero

Dear LCPL Barry Lorenz Kopp, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, Sir

Curt Carter
