A beloved brother and brother-in-arms

I watched a video of the Arlington Memorial service for Mike today. Created by his widow, Jane, and family, it was incredibly beautiful and moving. Mike was one year ahead of me in the fraternity. I also went to Vietnam and as an FO called in air support for the fighter pilots like Mike who selflessly flew into the mouth of danger to save my men (and me) more than once. This video allowed me to properly grieve for him. I look forward to seeing him again in the hereafter. Airborne, Michael!

Final Mission of CAPT Michael L. Klingner

CAPT Michael L. Klingner was a USAF pilot serving with the 308th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 31st Tactical Fighter Wing, 7th Air Force. On April 6, 1970, CAPT Klingner was flying a F-100D (#56-3278), call sign Sabre 31, on a strike mission approximately five miles east-southeast of Ban Vay, Laos. The target was marked by a Forward Air Controller (FAC) and the flight was briefed for a strafing pass. Klingner made his pass and was observed to have fired his guns. Some five seconds later, the flight leader and the FAC observed a large ball of fire as Klingner’s aircraft impacted with the ground. No parachute was observed and no beeper signal was detected. An aerial reconnaissance was made, but found no signs of survival. His remains were not recovered. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
