Ground Casualty

LCPL Michael G. Barton was a rifleman serving with K Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. On July 9, 1966, LCPL Barton was operating a M274 “Mule” utility truck on a narrow road in the vicinity of Chu Lai, Quang Tin Province, RVN, when he collided with another military vehicle. Barton was injured when the Mule overturned and pinned him underneath. He was hospitalized with a compound fracture of the right leg. He died four days later, the result of fat embolism.
