I was at Ft. Benning Ga. with then Capt. Bartholomew and we shipped out of Savannah Ga. for Vietnam after 3mths of maneuvers in the Carolinas! We got there in Aug. 65 and he was my commanding officer until I left in Feb. 66. We were involved in the battle of The Ia Drang valley that the movie We Were Soldiers was about! We flew out of Pleiku air base & a small rubber plantation a few miles from Pleiku! I remember his best friend Maj. Likem being killed by a drunk soldier on the base at Pleiku! I knew when he got the Purple Heart! Although it has been almost 60 yrs. I can recall almost my whole Vietnam experience and we were there together the whole time! I only learned that he was killed when I read the book We Were Soldiers! It mentions him and his nickname Black Bart!!!
