Ground Casualty

CPT Richard K. Jordan was the battery commander of D Battery, 1st Battalion, 5th Artillery, 1st Infantry Division. On October 20, 1965, CPT Jordan’s fourth day in Vietnam, he led his battery on a road march north from a staging area near Bien Hoa Airbase to a position on the 3rd Brigade defensive perimeter at Phouc Vinh. Once on location, he placed outposts in areas that had not been cleared of surrounding jungle. During the hours of darkness, Jordan left his command post to visit his men on every position of the perimeter. As he approached one of the posts, a guard opened fire. Hit in the abdomen, he was evacuated to a military hospital where he expired two days later. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org and westpointaog.org]
