honoring you...

War drew us from our homeland
In the sunlit springtime of our youth.
Those who did not come back alive remain
in perpetual springtime -- forever young --
And a part of them is with us always.

Ground Casualty

SP5 Jimmie J. Jones Jr. was a construction equipment mechanic serving with the 501st Engineering Company. On January 15, 1970, the 501st began a seven-week land clearing mission in Tay Ninh Province, RVN. During the operation, Army engineer Rome plow units pushed back jungle foliage several hundred feet along provincial routes TL-4 and TL-246, clearing roughly 3500 acres of land used by the North Vietnamese Army for infiltration of supplies and personnel. On March 7th, the last day of the operation, Jones was fatally injured in an explosion when he reportedly picked up U.S. ordnance off the roadway. Two other persons were wounded in the blast.
