SP4 James E. Johnson III was a Multichannel Transmission Systems instructor serving with Headquarters & Service Company, 426th Supply & Service Battalion. On February 23, 1971, SP4 Johnson was traveling on a motorcycle 1½ miles southeast of Phu Bai Airfield in Thua Thien Province, RVN, when an enemy B-40 rocket was launched in his direction.
