Ground Casualty

SN Edward N. Barr was a seaman serving on the barracks and hospital ship USS Colleton (APB-36). On May 4, 1969, the Colleton was at anchor in the My Tho River off Dong Tam in Dinh Tuong Province, RVN. According to the deck log for that day, during the morning muster of crew, it was noted that SN Barr was absent and had not been seen since 5:30 PM the previous day. A story later circulated on the Colleton that Barr went into Dong Tam, somehow got a couple hand grenades, and pulled the pins on them, taking his own life. The Navy, however, chose to code his death as accidental. A few days after Barr’s passing, a shipboard memorial service was held for him.
