Do not stand at my grave and weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

Michael A. Baronowski

Michael A. Baronowski, Norristown, PA, was a 19-year-old Marine when he landed in Vietnam. He took a reel-to-reel tape machine with him and made some remarkable recordings before he was killed in action in the fall of 1966, while serving with India Co, 3rd. Bn., 3rd. Marine Division. National Public Radio first broadcast The Vietnam Tapes Of Lance Corporal Michael A. Baronowski on All Things Considered, April 21, 2000. Mike's poignant comments brought tears to the eyes of thousands of people as they rushed home from work that Friday afternoon. The broadcast drew more written responses than any other broadcast in the history of National Public Radio.
