we will remember
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Final Mission of SP4 Melvin D. Barnett
SP4 Melvin D. Barnett and PFC Donald E. Smith were infantrymen serving with B Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Infantry, 11th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division. On September 8, 1971, their unit was on a combat patrol in Quang Ngai Province, RVN. They were moving along a trail when one of the soldiers happened upon a piece of bamboo that was lying across the path. He picked up the bamboo which was attached to a trip line and detonated a booby-trapped 81mm round. The bomb exploded, killing Smith and critically injuring Barnett. Barnett was evacuated from Vietnam to Okinawa where he succumbed to his injuries on September 23, 1971. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org and information provided by Daniel Keeter (March 2017)]
