Ground Casualty

SMSgt Thomas W. Jackson served with the 310th Tactical Airlift Squadron, 377th Air Base Wing, 7th Air Force. The 377th Air Base Wing was first organized in 1966 as the 377th Combat Support Group at Tan Son Nhut Air Base near Saigon, RVN. In January 1972, the 377th expanded to become the 377th Air Base Wing, and for the first time gained combat units when the 8th and 9th Special Operations Squadrons and the 310th Tactical Airlift Squadron were assigned or attached to it. Jackson’s unit, the 310th Tactical Airlift Squadron, performed airlift and airdrop missions utilizing Fairchild C-123 Provider transport aircraft and UC-123B models converted for defoliation and crop destruction duties. At 6:00 AM on June 22, 1972, an unresponsive Jackson was transported to the U.S. Army’s 3rd Field Hospital in Saigon where he was dead on arrival. Postmortem studies determined he expired after aspirating the contents of his stomach. Aspiration occurs when foreign material is inhaled into the airway causing asphyxiation from a blocked respiratory tract. In healthy adults, it may happen during sleep when the sedating effects of alcohol or drugs impair cough and gag reflexes. Jackson was 37 years old. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org and wikipedia.org]

honoring you...

Some may think you are forgotten
Though on earth you are no more
But in our memory you are with us
As you always were before….

We Will Remember

I had the honor to say your name during the 40th anniversary commemoration of the Wall. May you rest in peace.

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."
