Final Mission of ABH1 Dearing M. Jackson

ABH1 Dearing M. Jackson was an Aviation Boatswain serving as captain of River Patrol Boat 131 (PBR 131), part of River Division 543, Task Force 116, U.S. Naval Forces, Vietnam. On November 12, 1969, PBR 131 was conducting a joint-cordon and search operation with PBR’s 67 and 91 in support of Regional and Popular Force units on the Ba Ren River, about four miles southwest of Hoi An in Quang Nam Province, RVN. As the PBR’s entered the area to coordinate the movement of the RF/PF troops, several Viet Cong were sighted near bunkers. The PBR’s turned around to make a reconnaissance of the area when the enemy initiated contact. A B-40 rocket hit PBR 131 on the forward coxswain flat cowling, port side, glancing up through the canopy and radar dome. ABH1 Jackson was critically wounded, and the forward gunner was seriously wounded. Three Vietnamese sailors were also wounded. PBR 67 was hit by automatic weapons fire, but there were no personnel casualties and only minor damage to the PBR. The PBR’s and helicopter gunships placed heavy saturation fire into the enemy’s position. The wounded sailors were medivacked by a helicopter gunship, and the mission was terminated without any further incident. There were six Viet Cong killed in the operation. Jackson’s injuries required that he be evacuated to the U.S. Naval Hospital in Yokosuka, Japan, where he died December 13, 1969. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]

Remembering An American Hero

Dear ABH1 Dearing Michael Jackson, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter
