honoring you...

A butterfly lights beside us like a sunbeam
And for a brief moment its glory
and beauty belong to our world
But then it flies again
And though we wish it could have stayed...
We feel lucky to have seen it.

I heard the news today

I’ve seen the Legion memorial, and I often think of John, Danny, Bobby, and Robert. I told Danny the next time I get back to Bradley I’m going to have a beer with. I know we’re all going to just sit and talk about the old school days Mayb tell a few war stories. We’ll go our separate ways, me with a tear in my eye just like now and they’ll go back to their places with God. I know the next time I seen them we’ll meet at their place.

My Mother's Friend

About 40 years ago, my mother pointed John out to me in her high school yearbook. They were classmates. She said he was a very nice guy. I remembered his name after all these years. I look forward to finding his name on the wall with my two sons while visiting Washington D.C.

Remembering An American Hero

Dear SGT John Charles Howland, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter
