What I remember

India 3/7 was in the "rocket belt" area in the sand dunes about five miles outside Danang. We had minimal moonlight in this company size night position. Howe was lying in his sleeping hole with a brother marine. I believe his name is Ramirez. When the first frag detonated, he and Rameriz rolled out of their sleeping hole and began crawling to their fighting hole 10 meters forward. The second frag landed between these marines. Howe, who had never held his youngest child, made eye contact with Ramirez and rolled onto the grenade covering it completely in a curled up position to take the full impact of the impending explosive. He died instantaneously. He loved his wife and family, the Corps and Country Western Music. I will never forget his honor, courage and sacrifice. Semper Fi, brother!
