Ground Casualty

1LT Elvis G. Barker was a Ranger-qualified military advisor serving with Special Detachment 5891 (SD-5891), Headquarters, Military Assist Command Vietnam (MACV) Advisors. On March 1, 1965, 1LT Barker died seven miles from the Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in Quang Tri Province, RVN, in what was characterized as a “freak” grenade accident. Reportedly, Barker was killed when a grenade attached to his belt detonated as he climbed into a jeep on a road near the DMZ. A Vietnamese soldier accompanying him was also fatally injured in the blast. Barker was posthumously promoted to Captain.
