Remembering An American Hero

Dear SP4 Vins Ronald Hooper, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, Sir

Curt Carter

Battle Buddy

Vins and I were reassigned to the `173rd from the 1st Air Cavalry in 1967. We took our in-country R&R together. We spent time in Quinhon and then to Cam Ran Bay before getting to the 173rd in Bien Hoa. He went to the 2/503rd and I went to Recon 1/503rd. We were going to go back to the world together but a few weeks before we were to return to the U.S. he was killed at Dak To. I was there when I found out that he had been killed though I didn't get to see his body. I have always thought of him. Like me, he was just a young guy who was hopping that serving would give him some chances back in the world. For a long time I felt guilty about his death but then I decided to make the most of my life so that he would not have died in vain. Thank you my friend.

Thank you, cousin

You were always so sweet. The last time I saw you, I was in middle school and you were leaving the following day for Vietnam. I borrowed 35 cents to buy candy and promised to give it back to you when you came home. You came home in a casket. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. I owe you a big hug and kiss when I see you again in Heaven.

Love,
Cousin Diane (Hooper) Winston
