I took that picture

I took that picture of Sgt. Jimmy Lee Holcomb. It was the day before he was killed. He and Company C, 3rd Platoon were waiting for the choppers. I had been his platoon leader from March to June, 1966. He was a squad leader. One of the best soldiers I have ever known--quiet and fearless. His squad would follow him anywhere. He had been through many firefights and major battles, with two Purple Hearts, but the battle on November 1, 1966 would be his last. I wrote about him and the other incredible soldiers, Grunts, in my book, "A Haunting Beauty. "

honoring you...

Thank you for your service to our country so long ago sir. The remembrance from your brother Joe is touching and reflects the anguish experienced by so many who lost loved ones in this war. As long as you are remembered you will always be with us….

It hits home

I grew up in Russellville, WV the home of Sgt Holcomb. Known as Jimmy Lee to everyone there. He and his siblings were close to my mother and her siblings. I have always heard the stories of his death and it just seemed to get to me every time. I am grown now, and I think back to my childhood, growing up during the Viet Nam war and the losses close to home and kin. Such a tragedy. This week, in Russellville, WV, a new bridge was dedicated in honor of Jimmy Lee Holcomb. It was just absolutely fitting for that bridge to be dedicated in his honor. It doesn't bring him back. But it keeps his memory alive.
