Another Casualty on Thunder Road

Sgt. Hickman was my squad leader in 3rd platoon, A Co. 2nd Battalion /2nd Inf. Reg. of the 1st Infantry Div. Our base camp was Lai Khe . He & a Vietnamese sergeant named Son traded places with me one hot afternoon as we did a road sweep on Hwy 13 (Thunder Road) in March, 1966. They were both killed by a mine. My survivor guilt still haunts me.
The incident is recounted in my book THUNDER ROAD:THE JOURNEY HOME.
At least your journey home is over, Sarge. God bless you!

Remembering An American Hero

Dear SGT Dallas Edwin Hickman, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter

Dear soldier,
Thank you, My name is Zach Nicolay and I am a student at Gridley High School. This remembrance is part of the Gridley High School Posting Project. There is no way that I can fathom the courage and fearlessness that is required to go to war, and I want to thank you for paying the ultimate sacrifice in order to create a better, safer future for myself and others.
