Ground Casualty
The U.S. Army Support Command at Quin Nhon, RVN, performed logistical operations in support of combat units within the II Corps Tactical Zone. In Phu Tai Valley near Qui Nhon were tank farms and pipelines essential to providing fuel resources for combat units operating nearby. On April 15, 1970, contracted Korean Tong Shin employees were making repairs to a pipeline in the #1 Tank Farm when a small fire started. The flames were nearly contained when an explosion caused a much larger conflagration. One Korean employee and a U.S. soldier, SP4 John A. Hernandez from the 134th Quartermaster Company, were critically burned. Nineteen other personnel were injured. Hernandez succumbed to his injuries on April 30th; the Korean also died from his burn injuries. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]

Remembering an American Hero
Dear SP4 John Albert Hernandez, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say 'thank you'; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir
Curt Carter
