Fishing with my sister and Larry on Lake Mendota
I dated Larry's older sister, Joanne, and remember taking him fishing with my sister out on Lake Mendota when he was very young. We got out to governor's island and a huge storm came up and we had to hurry to get to shore. What an omen. I later was a senior at Lafollette when Larry came there for his senior year from East. He was a great guy and his sister and I broke up, I was still crazy about her. Talked a lot to Larry that senior year in the hopes his sister might reconsider but it wasn't meant to be. I went in the marine corps the year he died, I believe and ended up in a naval hospital in Japan. He was a great guy, a lot of fun, and I miss him. I always hoped he would connect with my sister but it never came about.

Remembering An American Hero
Dear LCPL Laurence John Herfel, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir
Curt Carter
