Shag in 3rd Platoon, Bravo Company, 5th of the 60th 3rd Brigrade, 9th Infantry, Army

As the platoon Sergeant, I selected Hensley to train for point man. He served awesomely. Saved my men a number of times. In the Hobo Woods, one more step and my platoon would have been blown away. He discovered a wire in the brush he was about to step through. The wire led to a 155 howitzer round, a large unexploited artillery round with a detonator attached triggered by a slight pull from the wire. Shag stopped the platoon. I went forward to fine Shag sitting shaking and pointing to the bush. I had a hard time finding the wire. When I did, the wire led to the booby trap. Just one example how this great soldier saved my platoon.

My Friend

Shag and I were friends before the Army and Nam back in Wythe County VA. My outfit moved from Tay Ninh down to Vinh Long. A soldier used to bring equipment to my shop for repairs and during one of his visits he was talking about this fella in their outfit. The more he talked the more that fella sounded familiar. I asked him what his name was and he said Shag. I was floored and told him to go get him and bring him there. Needless to say we were reunited for a while. I came home in Nov. 1970 and his brother Jim called me when he was killed. He was close to getting out also. I still miss him. Butch Chandler
