Final Mission of SP5 Herbert N. Adams

On May 10, 1966, a U.S. Army de Havilland Canada CV-2B Caribou (#62-4165) from the 134th Aviation Company was tasked with a Special Forces airdrop mission at a remote camp at Cai Cai in Kien Tuong Province, RVN. During a low level extraction, a load of rice hung up in the rear of the cargo compartment resulting in loss of control and caused the aircraft to crash. The pilot and co-pilot, CAPT Gil Roessler and CW2 Joe Hudson, escaped with serious injuries, but the flight engineer, SP5 Herbert N. Adams, and the Special Forces rigger on board, SGT John J. McCloskey, were killed on impact. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org, aviation-safety.net, underwoodconsulting.org, and vpha.org]

Remembering An American Hero

Dear SP5 Herbert Norman Adams, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, Sir

Curt Carter
