Ground Casualty

PFC Seaford N Hemmings was an Airborne-qualified infantryman serving with D Company, 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division. On December 11, 1965, while serving in Vietnam, Hemmings was fatally injured by a gunshot wound to the temple in an unintentional discharge incident. Reportedly, he was cleaning his weapon when another individual sitting next to him inadvertently fired a pistol. An army investigation ruled the case an accidental homicide.
