Thank you for your service to our country so long ago sir. While all deaths in Vietnam are tragic the fact you died just two days after your 21st birthday is especially so. Another life taken way too soon.

Bronze Star (with Combat Distinguishing Device (V) Awarded for Actions During the Vietnam War.
Citation:
For heroic achievement while serving as a Fire Team Leader with Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division (Reinforced) in the Republic of Vietnam on 31 January 1968. Corporal Ballinger's unit was conduction a patrol in Quang Nam Province when they suddenly came under a heavy volume of small-arms and automatic weapons fire from a numerically superior Viet Cong force. In the initial burst of fire, the point Marine was killed and the second man in the column was wounded. Although Corporal Ballinger's hand was injured and his rifle was damaged, he ran to the aid of his comrades. While assisting one of the injured Marines to a position of relative safety, he was forced to seek cover when the intensity of the enemy fire increased. After seizing the wounded man's rifle, he delivered a heavy volume of accurate rifle fire at the hostile emplacements until he was mortally wounded by a burst of enemy machine-gun fire. Corporal Ballinger's courage, aggressive fighting spirit and selfless devotion to duty in the face of extreme personal danger were an inspiration to al who observed him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
