Ground Casualty

At 10:15 AM on June 26, 1969, Tay Ninh West Base Camp in Tay Ninh Province, RVN, received ten rounds of enemy 122mm rockets. One of the projectiles impacted in the ASP (Area 18), slightly injuring one man from 29th General Support Group. He was treated and released. Another U.S. personnel, SP5 Michael D. Havel, a UH-1 helicopter mechanic from C Company, 229th Assault Helicopter Battalion, was critically injured when struck by metal fragments from one of the rockets. He was hospitalized and later expired. Damage to the base included one helicopter destroyed and one bunker destroyed.
