Ground Casualty

At 10:40 AM on March 17, 1969, a 5-ton Army truck was traveling along the access road at LZ Liz, a U.S. Army forward support base located in Quang Ngai Province, RVN, when it a hit pressure-type mine estimated to contain 50-85 pounds of TNT. Sniper fire followed the explosion which killed the driver, PFC Edward L. Chappell, and wounded four others. They were evacuated within minutes; however, one of the wounded passengers, 1LT Robert L. Baldwin, succumbed to his injuries the following day at a U.S. medical facility. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org and 1-20infantry.org]

Thinking of Bob

I am visiting a Vietnam veterans gathering today in Brevard County Florida in remembrance of Bob and all the troops whose lives ended in Vietnam. I touched your name on the Traveling Wall and remembered all the good times we had together.

I also remember and honor my MWD Sergeant 25X1 whose life also ended in Vietnam.

So much lost and so many opportunities that never happened.

I miss you my friend.

Remembering An American Hero

Dear 1LT Robert Lloyd Baldwin, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter
