Ground Casualty
Operation Fillmore was conducted by the 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division in Phu Yen Province, RVN, from March 26 to July 21, 1966. The operation was a continuation of the harvest security mission Operation Harrison from the previous month. By late March, much of the rice in the Tuy Hoa Valley had been gathered. To protect the remainder of the crop and deepen security in the valley, Operation Fillmore was initiated on the 26th. The 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment was retained as a reserve force at Tuy Hoa Air Base, while 2/327th Infantry and the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment patrolled the rice-growing plains and the western foothills. On the second day of the operation, PFC Horace A. Hampton from B-2/327th Infantry was on ammunition detail when an explosion occurred while carrying a box of ammo. The blast sent shrapnel into his torso, limbs, face, and head, killing him instantly. Hampton’s body was evacuated from the field and forwarded to the U.S. Army Mortuary at Tan Son Nhut Air Base where Graves Registration personnel prepared the remains for shipment back to his family in the United States.
