A friend I never really got to know

James we only met and exchanged greeetings several times in passing while living on hill 689. After 41 years this day seems like it was yesterday. I was only a few yards away sitting at the edge of my foxhole/living quarters when those rockets whistled in blowing me down into my hole.I caught only 3 pieces of shrapnel one of which is still in my hip. But you my friend were not so lucky and paid the ultimate sacrifice. I had the distinct honor of escorting you on the first leg of your journey back home to your loved ones albiet unofficial as they med-i-vaced us to DongHa. I think of you often and will always continue to do so. I regret not having the opportunity to get to know you better and I look forward to meeting you in the peacful confides of Heaven where I am sure you are continuing to work as the chaplains(our Lord himself)assistant. God bless you my friend and Semper Fi.

To a brave and loyal Marine

James,
I never had the priviledge of meeting you, but,I have come to know you, vicariously, through your brother,Ed. If you were anything like this firebrand, then you were hell on wheels. I showed up one night at an MCL meeting just to check it out and before I left, your brother had me signed up and "STANDING TALL". I will never forget that night, because I felt like I was among BROTHERS again. You see, I was not a Marine. I was a Navy Corpsman stationed with an FMF unit. One other night stands out in memory. This was the night your brother, and the Detatchment that bears your name, bestowed upon me and my fellow FMF Corpsmen the ultimate honor and compliment, the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor, representing full membership in this prestigious fraternity. There were tears in my eyes when Dexter Lee, a Marine WWII survivor of the Islands Campaign said of my fellow Corpsmen, "We couldn't have won the War without them". So you see, there is a shared bond between you, Ed, and we of the MCL, James L. Hammons Detatchment #939,that is eternal. I wish I could have met you. SEMPER FI, MARINE, and thank you for your sacrifice.

Headquarters and Service Company, 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines (Reinforced), 3rd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force was assigned a Defensive Position just outside of Khe Sanh, Republic of South Vietnam. Late in the Morning Battle, a
