REMEMBRANCES

LEFT FOR JOSEPH WILLIAM BAKER

A “Magnificent Bastard”

Joseph William Baker was a Navy Hospital Corpsman (HN) assigned to 2nd Platoon, Company F, 2nd Battalion 4th Marines, 9th Marine Amphibious Brigade, 3rd Marine Division, FMF.

Throughout the History of the United States Marine Corps, a Navy Corpsman has proudly served side by side with Marines to answer their cry of “Corpsman Up.” Joe you understood the bond - “Semper Fidelis.”

We were Navy Corpsman and served with the finest Marines in Vietnam – “The Magnificent Bastards”. We walked where they walked, ate what they ate, slept where they slept, got wet when they got wet, shot at when they were shot at, cried when they cried, laughed when they laughed and live … and you died as a "grunt in the bush".

We wept as we carried them from the Battle Field … and while reverently carrying you; they mourned your passing like that of a brother.

The day you arrive is lost to me; however, the day you left will never leave me.

"THEY ARE NOT DEAD - WHO LIVE IN THE HEARTS THEY LEAVE BEHIND".

I'm the One Called "Doc..."

I'm the One Called "Doc…"

I shall not walk in your footsteps,
but I will walk by your side.
I shall not walk in your image,
I've earned my own title of pride.
We've answered the call together,
on sea and foreign land.
When the cry for help was given,
I've been there right at hand.
Whether I am on the ocean
or in the jungle wearing greens,
Giving aid to my fellow man,
be it Sailors or Marines.
So the next time you see a corpsman
and you think of calling him "squid",
Think of the job he's doing
as those before him did.
And if you ever have to go out there
and you life is on the block,
Look at the one right next to you…
I'm the one called "Doc".
